This was a really nice day. The most notable part was the really friendly and helpful staff. The rooms were good and it was a great area.

Keeping in mind this hotel is being renovated; there is still a lot of work to be done. The bed was comfortable and the room clean.

Very nice and helpful staff. The rooms are very good, comfortable bed, the only downside is that you can hear a lot the passage of cars on the road passing by. The breakfast is very good and we have everything we need available (microwave, water fountain ..).

New owners? Completely renovated to best. Staff was above & beyond amazing such that there could not possibly be any dissatisfaction. Highly recommend, especially for the price.

Breakfast was great. Many selections. Tv in room did not work. Only 2 towels. No hairdryer. Sheets were like sandpaper. Very nice staff.

The hotel was being renovated while we stayed there so I hope that it gets updated nicely. The rooms are a bit outdated. The door in my bathroom was broken. But it was a convenient location to get around to all the sight seeing places in San Diego.

The property itself was very clean, the room was clean, parking was safe, they're still under construction, and renovations. The elevator was working. The only thing that I can say negative is that the walls are not sound proof, there was a man in the room next to mines, yelling all night and slaming things, fighting I couldn't sleep all night. I can compare this hotel with a motel 6. The only difference is their amenities. They also charged me for the room in advance and after I arrived they took $100 more as "deposit ", which supposedly will return to me in 7 days.

4/10 Fair

My room was clean and the staff were very polite and helpful. The problem was the area which is pretty scary due to the many drug users and a large homeless encampment in the area. Actually this is a problem all over SD. As a single woman traveling alone I did not feel safe outside of my room or in the parking lot. It’s one of those older motels with the room door opening to an outer walkway, so you can’t open your window or curtains comfortably. That said, the Alcala is close to everywhere you want to be in SD, including downtown, the beaches, and Sea World.

The entire hotel itself is under construction. Nowhere on the website is it disclosed that the property is under such heavy renovation.Upon check-in, we were not told that the pool was out of service. It took us getting ready for the pool with our two month old, to get all the way down to the pool area only to see a very small sign posted about how the pool was also under construction. Ironically, I myself checked into the hotel with a bikini and swim cover-up on, so it was very noticeable that we were interested in swimming. The younger girl working the front counter was doing her best to check in as many people as she could, but she repeatedly stated how understaffed they were. It just seemed like the hotel wasn’t prepared to continue service if they were under such heavy construction to the point where it would affect their guests. Location was great, just unfortunate that we were staying on hotel row and could’ve booked a better experience had we’ve been notified ahead of time of everything being not up to the same standards of the other hotels nearby.

10/10 Exceptional

The rooms for very clean and renovated. Everything was comfortable in the room. The only thing that we didn’t like were the breakfasts as they were all carbohydrate as in waffles, bagels, cereal. No fruits, no meats no eggs. That would be the only thing that I would say that they need to improve on.

One night stay with my kids. The property is being renovated and looks way cleaner with the new owners. Room was small but bed was comfortable. Kids enjoyed breakfast. Didn’t have a chance to try the pool. Will stay again.

Such a great hotel and excellent customer sevice! Very accessible, clean, and it is in a quite area. The staff at the front desk were phenomenal (cant remember names) as well as the housekeeping. Despite the ongoing rennovations everything seems great! Breakfast ia good but we opt outside as we are exploring new places to eat. Definitely recommend this to my friends ans will come stay here again when back in SD!

The property is currently undergoing renovation. The room was well-maintained and clean. The staff provided excellent service, and the check-in process was efficient. I particularly appreciate the secure gated parking, which ensured the safety of my vehicle.

The Alcala, formerly known as The Riverleaf Inn, is definitely an underrated hotel gem in San Diego. With new management and newly renovated facilities, I couldn't be happier with the stays I have had. While its location may seem a bit off the beaten trail at first glance, it's literally a 15-minute drive away from just about everything San Diego has to offer. The upgraded rooms, new 24-hour common dining area, as well as a continental breakfast that has a myriad of options from delicious waffles to easy grab-and-go options like string cheese and yogurts, have been welcomed surprises. The new management has definitely done wonders for the aesthetics, overall comfort, and security of the hotel, but my main reason for staying here has always been the exceptional staff. Raul, the morning front desk manager, is an integral part of this hotel and exudes professionalism, patience, and flexibility when dealing with patrons. He is wonderful, not only to chat with when checking in or out, but also goes above and beyond to meet the needs of the people staying at the hotel. He is a huge reason why I keep coming back to this hotel and has always made me feel welcomed and appreciated. The house staff is diligent and professional, and I appreciate all they do. I highly recommend The Alcala Hotel for anyone looking to stay in San Diego. Raul and the rest of the staff will definitely make sure your stay is comfortable, safe, and enjoyable.
