Very old motor hotel. I honestly do not think any maintenance is done here. Think of one of those places where the owners are older and don't have the energy to do any work and are also unwilling to pay for it. As a result, everything just slowly degrades: grout falls out of the shower, paint faded/chipped/flat out missing, electrical outlets worn out, towels worn out, parking lot full of holes, grounds overrun with weeds.
On the plus side the owners are fun to talk with and provide you with all the local folklore and recommendations you could ever want.
Bottom line? This is Idaho Springs after all. If you want the comfort/cleanliness/newness of a standard motel you will not be staying here. You will drive another hour to Denver or one of the ski towns. If you are ok with a (relatively) inexpensive room, and can keep your expectations LOW, the Columbine is on ok place for a short stay.
